Impact of Herbicides on Weed Flora and Soil Microflora of Rainfed Maize (Zea mays L.) Under Vidarbha Condition

Abstract

A field investigation was carried out at the Farm of Agronomy Department, Dr. Panjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidyapeeth, Akola in Kharif season during 2010-11. The investigation was carried out to study the relative performance of herbicides for control of weeds and their effect on yield of maize crop. Another aspect was to study the herbicidal effect on soil microflora. Result revealed that Weedy condition throughout the crop growth period caused 46.5 per cent reduction in grain yield of maize. Cultural weed management through hand weeding at 20 and 40 DAS provided most effective control of weeds across the crop growth period and yield performance of maize crop. Among herbicidal treatments, Atrazine 0.75 kg a.i. ha-1 PE fb 2,4-D 0.5 kg a.i. ha-1 PoE also provided extended weed control through the crop growth period in terms of improving the highest grain yield per hectare (35.74). Effect of herbicides on soil microbial population (bacteria, fungi and actinomycetes) was not affected due to herbicide used in maize.
